New Delhi: Indian sports fraternity on Wednesday condoled the untimely demise of acclaimed singer Krishnakumar Kunnath, popularly known as KK.

KK, who mesmerised music buffs for over two decades with his soulful numbers, passed away at the age of 53 on Tuesday night after a concert in Kolkata.

Former India star opener Virender Sehwag took to Twitter and said: "Tragic to hear about the passing away of KK after falling ill while performing in Kolkata. Another reminder of how fragile life is. Condolences to his family and friends."

"No conversation about growing up, and the 90s, is ever complete without KK and his songs. Every one of them has a specific memory or a time in our lives, associated with it. Woke up with shock and sorrow at his passing away. Strangely, will turn to his music for solace," said Indian football team captain Sunil Chhetri.

Former India spin-master Harbhajan Singh: "Devastated to know about sudden death of playback singer #KK. His soulful & melodious songs could easily connect with the hearts of millons of people . My heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and followers."

KK was among the performers in the "Josh of India" song in support of the Indian cricket team during the 1999 World Cup.

He has recorded over 700 songs and received six Filmfare nominations, and won the Filmfare Awards South in 2010 for being adjudged the best male playback singer.

Born in Delhi to Malayali parents, KK sang 3,500 jingles before getting his break in the film industry.

In 1999, KK came out with his maiden solo album titled Pal. The songs "Aap Ki Dua", "Yaaron" and the title track "Pal" became a rage among youngsters, and also topped the music chart. (UNI)
