Mumbai: In a shocking incident, a 50-year-old woman was found tied to a tree, with an iron chain, in a Maharashtra forest, police said on Monday, adding that they suspect her missing husband’s involvement.
Some documents, including a copy of a US passport and an Aadhaar card with a Tamil Nadu address, were recovered from the woman who was rescued from the forest near Sonurli village in Sawantwadi tehsil of Sindhudurg district on Saturday, police said.
“We believe her husband, who hails from Tamil Nadu, tied her there and fled," an official said, adding that the woman was very weak after remaining chained for days and not in a position to give a statement.
The official said police teams have left for Tamil Nadu, Goa and some other places to trace her relatives.
The woman was rescued after a villager who had gone to the forest to collect fire wood heard her cries for help on Saturday, police said.
The police said it seemed she had not eaten for several days. The woman was brought to Sawantwadi Cottage Hospital and later shifted to Goa Medical College for treatment.
Officials said that the woman is out of danger and doctors treating her found that she was carrying medical prescriptions related to psychiatric problems.
