In a shocking incident, a 45-year-old man in Indonesia allegedly killed his 60-year-old neighbour after being repeatedly asked why he was not married.
The incident took place in South Tapanuli regency, located in North Sumatra, on July 29, Indonesian media reported.
The victim, Asgim Irianto, was a retired civil servant. The accused, Parlindungan Siregar, was reportedly annoyed by the victim's persistent questioning about his marital status.
According to the statement of the victim's wife, Siregar, arrived at their home at about 8pm on July 29 wielding a piece of wood, and began attacking the victim without warning. Asgim ran out to the street, where he was pursued by Siregar before he was struck by a blow to the head. Even though he fell to the ground, Siregar continued to beat him mercilessly. Residents in the area intervened, stopped the beating and rushed Asgim to the hospital, but he died on the way.
The police arrested Siregar within an hour of the attack and started the investigation.
"He was determined to beat Asgim to death because of the frequent taunts about his single status," said a senior police officer after questioning Siregar.
