Abuja: Nigerian police on Sunday confirmed that 28 more students kidnapped by gunmen from a secondary school in the country's northwestern state of Kaduna have regained freedom.

The students were freed on Saturday night and arrangements are underway for their reunion with families, Mohammed Jalige, a spokesman for the police in Kaduna, told Xinhua by telephone on Sunday.

"Normally, they would receive medical attention followed by the reunion with their loved ones," Jalige said.

They were among an unspecified number of students kidnapped from the Bethel Baptist High School in Kaduna on July 5, following an attack by unknown gunmen in large numbers.

Jalige, however, declined comments on how the victims were freed or whether a ransom was involved in their release.

On Thursday, the Nigerian police said they had rescued two students kidnapped by the gunmen.

A joint team of the Nigeria police, army, and navy had succeeded in rescuing 26 students and a female teacher safely while in pursuit of the attackers on July 5 after receiving a distress call. (UNI)
