Pitru Paksha is considered an important period in the Hindu calendar dedicated to remembering and paying homage to ancestors. During these 16 days, families perform rituals such as Shradh, Tarpan and Pind Daan, along with charity and other religious activities, to honour their departed ancestors.

When Will Pitru Paksha 2026 Begin?
According to the Hindu Panchang, Pitru Paksha 2026 will begin on Saturday, September 26. The day will be observed as Purnima Shradh.
The main Shradh period will begin from September 27, with Pratipada Tithi of the Ashwin Krishna Paksha. The 16-day Pitru Paksha period will conclude on October 10, 2026, with Sarva Pitru Amavasya.
Purnima Shradh is performed for ancestors whose death occurred on Purnima Tithi. Amavasya Shradh, on the other hand, is considered suitable for ancestors whose exact date of death is unknown or when Shradh could not be performed on the prescribed Tithi.
What Should Be Avoided During Pitru Paksha?
Several activities are traditionally avoided during Pitru Paksha. According to religious beliefs, devotees should maintain a simple and disciplined lifestyle during this period.
People generally avoid cutting their hair, shaving their beard and trimming their nails during Shradh Paksha. Consumption of non-vegetarian food, alcohol and tamasic foods such as onion and garlic is also traditionally avoided.
Buying new clothes and starting major auspicious activities are also generally discouraged during this period. Traditionally, people avoid ceremonies such as marriage, engagement, Mundan and Griha Pravesh, as well as starting a new business or other major ventures.

What Should Be Done During Pitru Paksha?
During Pitru Paksha, feeding animals and birds is considered an important traditional practice. If a cow, dog, crow or other animal or bird comes to the house, devotees are traditionally advised not to drive it away. Instead, they may offer food and water.
According to Hindu beliefs, such acts of compassion and charity are considered a way of honouring ancestors. It is traditionally believed that receiving the blessings of ancestors brings happiness, prosperity and well-being to the family.
Performing Shradh, offering Tarpan and Pind Daan, and donating food or other essentials are also among the practices traditionally followed during Pitru Paksha.
