After Kolkata, Uttarakhand nurse raped, killed while returning home from hospital

Amid nationwide uproar over the brutal rape and murder of a 31-year-old woman PG trainee doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Hospital, another rape and murder of a nurse was reported from Uttarakhand.

Uttarakhand police on August 14 apprehended a suspect in the alleged rape and murder of the nurse.

The body of 33-year-old nurse, who went missing on July 30 in Rudrapur, Udham Singh Nagar district, was found on an empty plot in a border area of Uttar Pradesh.

The victim, a resident of Gadarpur’s Islamnagar, worked as a nurse at a private hospital in Nainital and lived with her 11-year-old daughter in Bilaspur Colony. Her sister reported her missing on July 31, prompting a police investigation.

A week later, her body was discovered in an empty plot in Uttar Pradesh’s Dibdiba area and was subsequently sent for a post-mortem examination.

The suspect, identified as Dharmendra, a labourer from Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, was arrested from Jodhpur, Rajasthan. According to police, Dharmendra raped and strangled her to death while she was returning home alone from her shift at the hospital.

During the investigation, the police found the victim’s phone in Jodhpur. Using technical and CCTV evidence, the police saw the accused following the victim.

He has confessed to the crime. Dharmendra is a drug addict, the police revealed, adding that after sexually harassing the victim and assaulting her, he took her belongings and escaped.
