Barmer in Rajasthan sizzles at 48 C as South West monsoon advances

Pune: While favourable conditions will help in the advance of Southwest Monsoon over some more parts of south Bay of Bengal, remaining parts of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Andaman Sea and some parts of east-central Bay of Bengal over the next two days, extreme high temperatures have been experiences in vast areas across the peninsula with Barmer in Rajasthan recording 48 degrees Celsius.
 
Day temperatures were markedly above normal (5.1°C or more) at isolated places over Assam and Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh; appreciably above normal (3.1°C to 5.0°C) at a few places over Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit, Baltistan, Muzaffarabad, Punjab; and at isolated places over Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Gujarat state, Rajasthan.
 
The day temperatures were above normal (1.6°C to 3.0°C) at many places over west Madhya Pradesh, Madhya Maharashtra, Konkan and Goa; at a few places over Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura and at isolated places over Uttarakhand.
 
The day temperatures were appreciably below normal (-3.1°C to -5.0°C) at isolated places over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal; below normal (-1.6°C to -3.0°C) at most places over Rayalaseema; at many places over Bihar, Telangana; at a few places over coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam; at isolated places over Odisha, interior Karnataka, Kerala and Mahe and near normal over rest parts of the country.
 
On Wednesday, the highest maximum temperature of 48.0°C was reported at Barmer (Rajasthan) over the country.
 
Hailstorms were reported at isolated places over east Madhya Pradesh.
 
Heat wave to severe heat wave conditions prevailed over many parts of west Rajasthan; over some parts of east Rajasthan. Heat wave conditions prevailed in isolated pockets of Haryana, Gujarat and west Madhya Pradesh. Heat wave conditions have been prevailing over Gujarat region since May 15; Saurashtra and Kutch since May 16 and over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan since May 17.
 
Warm night conditions were observed in some parts of Punjab, Haryana, west Uttar Pradesh and west Rajasthan.
 
Rain or thundershowers have occurred at most places in Kerala, Andaman and Nicobar and Lakshadweep and at a few places in Sub Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim, Gangetic West Bengal, Jharkhand, Bihar, Vidarbha, Telangana, Tamil Nadu and coastal Karnataka and at isolated places in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Odisha, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, east Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Konkan and Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, Marathwada, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Rayalseema, north interior Karnataka and south Interior Karnataka.
 
Mainly dry weather has prevailed in Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab, Jammu-Kasmir and Ladakh, west Rajasthan and Gujarat State.
