Fire damages Shrine in Srinagar, Muslims allege 'sabotage'; police registered case

Srinagar: A fire incident damaged the shrine of revered saint Hazrat Baba Naseeb-u-Din Gazi in Srinagar’s Sangam Eidgah area during the intervening night of Tuesday and Wednesday, officials said.
 
After the incident, a large number of people including women took to streets alleging “sabotage” and demanded a probe.
 
Jammu and Kashmir Police said that it took cognizance of the incident of arson and damage to the shrine and registered FIR under relevant sections of law in Police Station Sangam.
 
“Police have taken cognizance of the incident of arson & damage to the shrine of Baba Naseeb-ud-din Gazi. FIR No. 24/24 under relevant sections of law stands regd in PS Sangam'', police said on X.
 
They said, “thorough & speedy investigation is underway to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice”.
 
Police also appealed to the common public to desist from spreading rumours/false information.
“They shouldn't fall prey to false propaganda of anti-social elements. Legal action shall be taken against those who are found to be involved in provocative act/instigation”, police added.
 
Earlier, Fire and Emergency Service officials said that fire broke out at around 1.40 am in the shrine at Sangam Eidgah causing partial damage to the structure.
 
Several firefighting engines were rushed from the city centre to douse the leaping flames.
The cause of the fire is being investigated, they said.
