Kerala: Stampede during Tech Fest in Cochin University of Science and Technology; 4 die, 72 injured

Kochi: In a tragic incident, four students including two girls died and another 72 persons suffered injuries in a stampede during a Tech Fest at the Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) campus here on Saturday.
 
The incident happened during a music concert led by Nikhita Gandhi that was held at an open-air auditorium in the CUSAT campus, sources said.
 
All the injured were taken to the nearest hospitals. The condition of two of them is said to be critical.
 
The victims were identified as Athul Thampi of Koothattukulam, Anriftha of North Paravur and Sarah Thomas of Thamarassery. The identity of a male student is yet to be known.
 
At least 46 injured students were admitted to Kalamassery Medical College, and others were taken to various nearby private hospitals.
 
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan condoled the demise of the students and directed ministers, P Rajeev, Veena George and Dr R Bindu, to visit the spot.
 
The accident happened after the students entered the venue through the gate following a heavy rain. (UNI)
