Honour Killing: SC cancels bail of Rajasthan man accused in killing of Malayali brother-in-law in front of his pregnant wife

Honour Killing: SC cancels bail of Rajasthan man accused in killing of Malayali brother-in-law in front of his pregnant wife

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday cancelled the bail granted by the Rajasthan High Court to the accused of an honour killing case, in which a Kerala youth allegedly shot dead in front of his pregnant wife.

A Bench headed by Chief Justice NV Ramana was hearing the petition filed by a 29-year-old woman against her brother Mukesh Chowdhary who was allegedly involved in the murder of her husband Amit Nair in connection with their inter-caste marriage.

While setting aside the order of Rajasthan HC, the bench asked the accused to surrender.

As per Mamta Nair's plea, her parents, and two other men have barged into the couple's home and shot Amit before attempting to drag Mamta back to her parents' house.

She was six months pregnant at the time.

Senior counsel Indira Jaising, assisted by Advocate-on-Record Nupur Kumar, appeared for the petitioner and opposed the bail granted to Chowdhary.

"This is a blatant case of honour killing of the husband of a woman who married against her family’s wishes," Jaising had said in her submission, stating the accused--family members--were making attempts to dissuade her from marrying the man long before she thought of marrying him.

The mother and father entered her house with a sharpshooter, who shot at the husband point-blank. It was only the neighbours who protected this girl. Otherwise, the plan was to kidnap her, she said. (UNI)
