Karnataka Govt shuts Bengaluru's GT Mall, which denied entry to farmer in dhoti, for 7 days

Bengaluru: The Karnataka Legislative Assembly on Thursday taken a decisive action in response to a controversy at GT World Mall, ordering its closure for seven days following a dispute over attire.

The incident unfolded when Fakeerappa, an elderly farmer, was denied entry into the mall despite having tickets to watch a film with his family. His attire, consisting of a dhoti, kurta, and pagadi (turban), was cited as the reason for refusal, sparking widespread criticism and debate.

Speaking on the issue in the Assembly on Thursday, Karnataka Minister of Urban Development and Town Planning, Byrathi Suresh, announced the temporary closure of GT Mall as a penalty.

"The government has the authority under existing laws to enforce such actions," Minister Suresh affirmed, following consultation with a former BBMP Commissioner.

Assembly Speaker UT Khadar expressed support for the decision, emphasizing the importance of upholding promises made to the public.

This development occurs amidst the Siddaramaiah-led Congress government's recent initiatives aimed at bolstering Kannada language and culture, including proposed measures for job reservations for local residents in the private sector.
